Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need planning permission for a house extension?
Many house extensions, particularly single-storey rear extensions, can be built under Permitted Development rights without a formal planning application. However, Permitted Development has specific size limits and does not apply in Conservation Areas, to listed buildings, or if your permitted development rights have previously been removed by a planning condition. What is the difference between planning permission and Building Regulations?
Planning permission is granted by the local council and relates to the appearance and impact of your project on the surrounding area. Building Regulations relate to the structural integrity, safety, energy efficiency and health standards of the construction itself. Many projects require both, though some extensions can proceed under Permitted Development while still needing Building Regulations sign-off.
